Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about eligibility, applications, decisions, payments, and donations.

Who may apply?

Eligible applicants must live in the United States and have a spinal cord injury, paralysis, or another serious injury or condition causing significant long-term mobility limitations. Every complete application is reviewed individually.

What may the Individual Assistance Program consider?

The program may consider eligible wheelchair and mobility equipment, pressure-relief and positioning items, transfer equipment, and limited medical or rehabilitation expenses related to the qualifying injury or condition.

How much assistance may be available?

The Foundation may generally award up to $1,000 for an approved request. An award may be less and depends on the documented need, other resources, program fit, approval, and available funding.

Is assistance guaranteed?

No. Applying does not guarantee approval, payment, or a particular award amount. The Foundation may approve, partially approve, decline, defer, or request more information.

How do I apply?

Review the Apply for Assistance page and open the Foundation-managed Google Form. Complete the requested questions and provide the required supporting documentation.

What documents may be required?

The Foundation may request medical confirmation of the qualifying injury or condition, an itemized quote or invoice, a brief financial-need explanation, and other information needed to verify the request.

How long will review take?

The Foundation aims to provide an initial response within 3–5 business days after a complete application is received. A final decision may take longer.

Can I apply if I am fundraising elsewhere?

Yes. Another fundraiser does not automatically disqualify an applicant. The Foundation may consider other available resources when reviewing the need.

How is approved assistance paid?

Whenever possible, approved assistance is paid directly to a qualified vendor, repair company, rehabilitation provider, or healthcare provider rather than to the applicant.

Does approved assistance have to be repaid?

Approved charitable assistance generally does not need to be repaid unless different written terms are clearly communicated before the assistance is accepted.

Can the Foundation help with an emergency?

Are donations tax-deductible?

Nathan Powell Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
